i know your heart belongs to someone you've yet to meet
After work today, I attended a team dinner at Mainland China. I had not been to Mainland China since the time several months ago when we waited a ridiculous amount of time for our takeout to be prepared. The food is good, although I was startled to realize tonight that I've forgotten what American Chinese food tastes like. I know that the Chinese food here isn't quite right, and I know that I like American Chinese food better, but I have no idea what the differences are anymore. If acclimation means accepting substandard noodles and strangely-flavored chicken dishes, then I think I'm acclimated to India.
Seven of us have train tickets for Hampi, and we have rooms booked for Saturday night. I am really excited about going for two reasons. The first is that Hampi itself should be amazing--it was the capital of a vast empire in the 13th century, and the ruins are apparently fascinating. The second is that the trip has all the makings of a fun disaster. We have 5/6 of the people from the top two teams in the scavenger hunt, which means that we have already proven our collective stupidity. We also have tickets for two overnight trains; while we're traveling in first class, which is as lap-of-luxury as it gets here, the bathrooms are apparently still little more than a hole cut in the floor of the train. So, I intend to wear sneakers so that I don't lose a sandal in the toilet. I only intend to pack a change of clothes, my knife, my flashlight, and a lot of antibacterial hand sanitizer, but I think this will get me through the weekend. Oh, and I'm definitely taking my camera--expect some great pictures on Monday.
Unless I happen to write tomorrow from work, this will be my last post for a few days; we're leaving the office at six, having a quick dinner at home, and catching a 9pm train to Hampi. We're getting back Monday morning just in time to go to work (which will be a blast, since we'll probably be tired, hungry, and dirty). Then, the week's madness starts again, before a really quick trip to Delhi next weekend.
And now I will leave you with some advice that I got from a traffic billboard in Hyderabad this evening: 'Drive slow...unless you have an appointment with god'. Goodnight everyone!
